Hatay Archaeology Museum
Hatay Archaeology Museum, whose modesty belies the splendors of its contents, is second to none as a repository of irreplaceable heritage spanning 13 of the region’s earliest civilizations dating back to the third century B.C. It is the world’s largest mosaic museum, displaying mosaic art at its most expressive. Realistic scenes depict Roman gods and heroes of mythology, delivering their emotion with a strength that rivals that of painting. The museum offers universal appeal and importance, showcasing artistic, cultural and architectural cross-fertilization across societies.
The February 6th earthquakes damaged the museum, which is currently in need of machinery and equipment for the preservation and restoration of the artifacts it houses. Donations are also necessary in establishing a mobile restoration and conservation laboratory which will be of benefit not only to the museum but to cultural heritage sites across the earthquake-affected region.
